I Love to Tell the Story is a well-known hymn which was written as a poem by an English evangelist, Katherine Hankey. Hankey was very sick while in a mission in Africa in 1866. During her convalescence, she wrote a long poem in two parts about the life of Jesus. The first part was a poem of fifty stanzas, titled "The Story Wanted" (dated January 29, 1866) and second part titled "The Story Told" (dated November 18, 1866). Dr. W. Howard Doane took some verses from part 2 of Hankey's poem to compose the words to I Love to Tell the Story. It was set to music by William G. Fischer.
